Some thoughts...

Carla Rice is a very powerful writer, and I think that is an understatement. While reading her article entitled "Out from Occupation" in Canadian Woman Studies: An Introductory Reader, I found myself agreeing with everything, which is very good for a writer these days, where we are constantly assaulted with “the real world” and “what real people are saying” on TV. This also led to some strong discussion in our groups, mostly siding with her writings. My question related to her quote “The female body becomes the battleground of the war against women, and the battleground itself, our own worst enemy." I asked the group whether or not they felt like they were waging a war against themselves, to elicit some personal responses. The women in my group all have quite strong, confident personalties, and they felt comfortable with the way look and feel about themselves. My fiancĂ©e has constantly been in a battle with herself about her image, and is only now accepting the body she has for what it is and what I love about her.

I don't know what it was that made people start thinking that thin was in. Of course, we can trace it back to Twiggy in the 60's, being the icon of haute couture. All women wanted to be an ideal of haute couture, and so that style came in. But why the sudden shift? Why are 'plus-sized' models the ones that are the healthiest and have an average sized body? Why did it take just one woman, after years of beautiful, healthy, curvy women like Marilyn Monroe, to change society into a self-war raging anarchy? These questions boggle my mind, as a human being and as a man. I wouldn't want someone who can't keep their ribcage hidden to bear my children. I think it is an extremely unattractive quality for a woman to be constantly primping, playing, poking and prodding at themselves; but maybe I am the exception? This form of living is obviously still being pushed by someone.

Back in the Sack.

for the new year!

Going out for a pint tonight with T&J and then coming home and hopefully sleeping better tonight. Last night I slept terrible, new place, new sized bed... and to add to my tiredness I helped Hedow move a bunch of big stuff into hers and Jackie's apartment today. And tomorrow I will be helping Jackie move all her stuff in, as well as a bit more for Heather most likely.

Ahhhhh. Sleep will be awesome tonight.

Started work, finally.

I started work again yesterday. hooray...? These first few days are super boring. Take bokes from pile. Open boxes. Put pamphlets on shelves. And all this will have to be re-done in a different organization when the older woman comes back in. GAH.

And I work with a girl who is like Penelope from SNL... oi vay...
